They say revenge is best served cold, but adding a little heat never hurt.
The prompt is:
HOT REVENGE
The scorch marks on the castle wall still mark where they burned my Ma. I can see them as I walk with the other peasants who are looking for work. Ten years has faded them, but plenty of new ones overlay the old.
Ma and Gran argued the night before they came for her.
“Two bad harvests in a row. They’ll come up here lookin’ for somebody to blame,” Gran said as she tucked her tinctures, potions, herbs, and roots into a gunny sack.
“We’ve been healing their broken bones and easing their prickly heat for three generations now. Surely they won’t turn on us when they need us most.”
Gran just shook her head and kept packing. “They’re whisperin’ ‘bout the Devil down there. And they’re pointin’ up here when they do.”
No one asked my opinion, being just twelve, even though I had a talent for the spells neither could match. No more was said that day, but when Gran woke me in the dead of night, I went willingly. Gran’s stories of the olden times, told on many wintry nights before the fire, scared me more than Ma’s logic reassured. So I slipped from the blanket and grabbed my already-packed satchel from under the bed. Sneaking away like two thieves in the night, we left Ma to her fate.
I’ve heard Ma’s screams echoing through the valley in my dreams ever since.
Now that Gran has passed and I’ve grown even stronger, I’m back with a new name and glam features to minister to the ailing king. It was a simple thing to bewitch the men he sent in search of a healer. I made sure they paid me in advance, though, as the king will soon wish for Ma’s flames as a relief from my cure.
