“Un-Resolved” — FWG Flash Fiction for 12/7/2024

Some resolutions are meant to be broken.

The image prompts are on hiatus until January, so this week’s prompt is to write a story using only dialogue. No tags, no action, just dialogue.

UN-RESOLVED

“I told you this was a bad idea.”

“Oh, come on, it’ll be fun. An adventure. Something to laugh about and tell our grandkids when we’re old.”

“You mean your grandkids. There won’t be any ‘our’ kids, let alone grandkids.”

“Yeah, yeah. I don’t want to have that debate again. It was just an expression, a turn of phrase. Besides, no one knows what the future holds.”

“Look, kids implies marriage, and you know I’m dead set against the whole idea.”

“Just because your parents’ marriage didn’t work out—”

“Nevermind. Let’s just keep moving. Where is this surprise, anyway? I hope it’s close by. It’ll be dark soon.”

“It’s just over this ridge.”

“I hope so. We’ve been hiking this trail for hours. It had better be worth it.”

“Oh, it is. Here, let me help you up…see?”

“Oh. Oh, my. It’s…it’s beautiful. It looks like a fairy tale cottage. Wait, there isn’t an old witch inside waiting to cook us in a pot, is there?”

“Nah, she isn’t that old, and she prefers to use her oven. Just kidding. No, I rented it from a guy in the village. We have it for the night. Let’s go inside and light a fire.”

***

“Mmm, this cocoa tastes good. And the fire is cozy. If you were going for romantic, you hit it out of the park.”

“I knew you’d like it. It’s the perfect setting…”

“Wait, what are you doing? Get up off your knee—. What’s that? Oh, my God, it’s gorgeous.”

“Julie, my love, will you—”

“Yes! Yes! Yes!”

THE END
